ESS1 (5-8) POC-3 - Explain how Earth events ( over time and abruptly) can bring about changes in the Earths surface: landforms, ocean floor, rock features, or climate.
3a- Describing events and the effect they have on the climate (ex El Nino, deforestation, glacier melting, and increase in greenhouse gases).
Context of Lesson:
In this class period each group will be receiving 3 to 5 minutes to present their projects to the class. The students will have to include certain things in their presentation to the class. First off they will have to show their visual aid and they will be able to use that aid with their presentation in front of the class. The students will have already received a guideline on what is expected of them and what issues must be mentioned during their presentations. Since there are less groups going the second day of presentations the projects wont take up the whole class period. After the last presentation the students will be writing a reflection sheet on the project which they have just completed. After the reflection sheet they will be creating questions by looking through their notes and textbook. These questions will be used during the students review game which will be the next class. This review game is going to be used to prepare the students for the Unit Test.
Opportunities to Learn:
Depth of Knowledge
DOK 4 Extended Thinking- The students will be presenting in front of the class their topic of global warming. They will be including how they feel global warming is going to effect the Earth as well as how it is effecting the earth in current times. The student will be the teacher for 5 minutes in front of the class and will be sharing their knowledge with the rest of the class.
Prerequisite Knowledge
The students will have extensive knowledge on global warming due to earlier assignments as well as their own research which they have completed to do their project.
Plans for Differentiating Instruction
Accommodations and modifications
Environmental factors
Each group will get their 3 to 5 minute time period to get in front of the classroom and give their presentation. It is important for the students to behave like adults when the other students are presenting. They will be told that their behavior during the other students presentations will affect their grade.
Materials
Students visual aids, teachers grading sheet
Objectives:
The students will be experiencing what it is like to give a presentation to the class, in an essence teaching a class, which will include a visual for the class.
Also the students will be showing their in depth knowledge on global warming by handing in their 2-3 page essay.
Instruction:
Opening:
The teacher will give a brief speech on how the students must be on their best behavior during the other students presentations. Then the teacher will ask any students if they wish to go first, and for anyone who does not volunteer the names will be picked at random to see who presents next.
Engagement:
The students will be giving 3-5 minute presentations throughout the entire period, and the teacher will be sitting in the back of the room grading the presentations. Categories which the students will be graded on will be Content, Clarity, Visual aids, and being with in the 3-5 minute time period.
When the presentations are over the students will be creating questions from their notes, textbook, or project which they will be giving to the teacher and the teacher will use during the review game the next day. The students will be coming up with their own questions for the review.
Closure:
The students will fill out exit slips stating what they liked or disliked about the unit on The changing Earth.
For homework the students will be creating more questions for the review game. If the students come up with any higher level questions then they will get extra credit points on the test.
Assessment:
The students will be graded on their presentations as well as on their research papers on global warming.
